Burjeel Hospital is in major Arabic and English news with Prof. Dr. Walid Shaker, Consultant – Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Head of Cardiac Surgery, for saving a 9-year old girl from heart failure.
Louise Cindy was admitted after her mother, Mrs. Brenda Sumalinog, came to Burjeel to seek medical help. “When Louise would walk for a very long time, her heart would palpitate and beat very fast, which was very unusual. She even fainted once and her lips turned white,” recalled the alarmed mother.
After series of tests, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shaker diagnosed Louise with a triple congenital cleft of the mitral valve, which caused a huge leak in her heart.
“Louise’s case is very rare. If left untreated, this condition could lead to a heart failure even at such a young age,“ said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Walid. Due to the leak in her heart, Louise could not do things which kids at her age would normally do: run, play, or even climb stairs – because her heart would palpitate. "The valve leak was preventing Louise from living a normal life; at the same time, the possibility of heart failure was putting her life at high risk,” added Assoc. Prof. Dr. Walid.
